Replace your light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. Compact fluorescent bulbs use about a quarter of the energy of incandescent (standard) bulbs and last 6 to 25 times longer.
Fix leaky doors and windows. Use caulking and weather stripping to fix windows and doors that have a draft. You can learn more from the National Renewable Energy Lab.
Wash your clothes in cold water and dry with the moisture sensor on. About 90 percent of the energy used to wash clothes is to heat the water. Most new dryers have a moisture sensor that automatically turns the dryer off when the clothes are dry.
Replace outlet and light switch plates on exterior walls with insulated plates.
Upgrade the insulation in the attic and other areas of your home. Depending upon when your home was built and where you live, determine how much insulation you should have using the Energy Savers website.
Choose high efficiency rated Energy Star models when air conditioners, heaters, hot water heaters and other appliances are replaced. You can learn more about Energy Star rated appliances here.
Check the air filter in your air conditioner and heater in the winter and summer. Replace it when it is dirty which is usually twice a year depending upon how often you use your air conditioner and heater.
Choose high efficiency double or triple paned windows when you replace them. You can learn more about Energy Star ratings of windows here.
Set the program on your programmable thermostat so that you are not heating or cooling your home when no one is present. For every degree you lower your heat in the winter, you'll save up to 5 percent on heating costs.
Choose an Energy Star rated high reflectivity roof when you have your roof replaced. A roof that reflects sunlight can reduce your air conditioning use in the summer by 10 to 15 percent.
Use a solar cover on your pool or hot tub. Up to 70 percent of heat loss from a swimming pool is from water evaporating. In addition to keeping the pool or hot tub water warm it will reduce the amount of water and chemicals you need to add.
Unplug your home entertainment and computer systems when you are not home for a few days or longer. Energy used by cable boxes, digital video recorders, TVs, DVD players, computers and computer monitors even when they are in "sleep mode" can add up to a lot of energy.
